If you’re planning to study, work, or move abroad, you’ve probably come across two big English tests: TOEFL and IELTS. Both are widely accepted, but which one is right for you? Let’s break it down.
1. Purpose
IELTS is often required for immigration to countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
TOEFL is more popular with universities in the United States, though many other schools accept it too.
2. Test Format
IELTS has a face-to-face Speaking test with an examiner. If you’re comfortable talking directly to someone, this may suit you.
TOEFL Speaking is recorded on a computer. This can feel less stressful for some, but more difficult for others.
3. Writing and Reading
Both exams test similar skills, but TOEFL passages are often academic-style, while IELTS includes a mix of academic and general topics.
4. Scoring
IELTS scores range from Band 1 to 9.
TOEFL is out of 120 points.
So, which should you choose? If your goal is immigration, IELTS is usually the safer choice. If your goal is studying in the U.S., TOEFL might be better. If both exams are accepted where you’re applying, choose the one that matches your strengths.
